Title: “Nós não somos nada nesta vida” : identidade e atividade intelectual na obra de Lima Barreto

Abstract (native): O presente trabalho visa analisar a formação identitária de Lima Barreto, observando a construção de seu discurso enquanto intelectual negro nos mais variados textos como romances, contos, crônicas, cartas e seu diário íntimo. A proposta é identificar como, à medida que certos acontecimentos iam se desenrolando na trajetória de Lima Barreto, sua percepção do mundo e seu discurso também ia se alterando, fator este que acabou se refletindo principalmente em seus textos ficcionais. A pesquisa realiza também um exame de sua relação com a literatura, sua visão enquanto amanuense da Secretaria da Guerra sobre o funcionalismo público, a forma como interagia com seus familiares e outras questões de ordem íntima. Assim como busca arrolar as principais características da obra de Lima Barreto, os temas mais frequentes e os principais intelectuais com quem o escritor de Todos-os-Santos dialogou, debateu, trocou ideias ou acabou por desenvolver verdadeira repulsa. Por fim, este trabalho objetiva também investigar como Lima Barreto compreendia as ideias mais populares nos grandes círculos intelectuais nacionais e estrangeiros, como o nacionalismo, a antropologia criminal, a frenologia e outras ciências afins, o anarquismo e como estas ideias afetavam a realidade do Brasil durante a Primeira República (1889 – 1930), na visão do escritor. Observando de que maneira Lima Barreto buscou inserir-se neste debate e qual postura adotou frente a estas temáticas.
Abstract (english): The present study aims to analyze the Lima Barreto’s formation of identity, observing the construction of his discourse as a black intellectual in the most varied genres such as novels, short stories, chronicles, letters and his diary. The idea is to identify how as certain events unfolded in Lima Barreto's path, his perception of the world and his discourse also changed, an aspect that was mainly reflected in his fictional works. The research also conducts an examination of his relationship with the literary field, his view as a public servant, the way he interacted with family members and other intimate issues. As well as seeking to list the main characteristics of Lima Barreto's work, the most frequent themes and the main intellectuals with whom the writer of “Todos-os-Santos” dialogued, debated, exchanged ideas or eventually developed a very big repulsion. Finally, this study also pursuit to investigate how Lima Barreto understood the most popular ideas in major national and foreign intellectual circles, such as nationalism, criminal anthropology, phrenology and other related sciences, anarchism and how these ideas affected the reality of Brazil during the First Republic (1889 - 1930), in the writer's view. Observing how Lima Barreto sought to fit into this debate and what attitude he adopted towards these themes.
