O instituto nacional de ciência política (INCP) : uma "escola de patriotismo" no Estado Novo (1940-1945)

Abstract

The present work aims to analyze the National Institute of Political Science (INCP), a civil organization whose main idealizer was the intellectual, political and literate gaucho Pedro Vergara. The INCP brought together several Brazilian intellectuals from 1940 to 1945, with the purpose of studying the main Brazilian statesmen, especially the work of President Getúlio Vargas. The institution organized several debates and conferences at the Brazilian Press Association (ABI), which led it to define itself as a "School of Patriotism" at the service of the nation. That is, INCP played an important role as propagandist of Estado Novo. In order to understand the formation, organization and structuring of this institution, the research methodology consisted of the analysis of the Brazilian Vision and Political Science journals, published by INCP and reflecting those developed by this institution. In addition to these sources, research in the journalistic press of the period contributes to encompass the understanding of the object. In order to assign a definition to the Institute and its members, concepts such as "space of sociability" and that of “intelectual” were used, meaning that helped to understand the role played by this institution in the period and the relation of these intellectuals with the state.
