Análise da relação entre volumetria e classificação visual da atrofia hipocampal em imagens de ressonância magnética

Abstract

One of the most widely applied techniques for the initial evaluation of patients with cognitive decline is brain imaging through magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). As one of the primary diagnostic tools for Alzheimer’s disease, MRI can identify characteristic changes associated with neurodegenerative processes, such as hippocampal atrophy. The hippocampus is a vital structure for memory, and its volume tends to decrease in size in several brain disorders, including Alzheimer’s disease. Visual assessment by a neuroradiologist may present low sensitivity, highlighting the need for quantitative analysis. The present study evaluated the relationship between MTA scale classification data from MRI images assessed by two experienced neuroradiologists and hippocampal volumetry data obtained from the same set of images.
