Adaptações literárias do texto para os quadrinhos : pensando fora da caixa para entender os quadros em Othello

Abstract

This dissertation seeks to analyze adaptations, as process and product, through the comparison of three different versions of the same literary work. During the research on adaptations, this dissertation aims: (i) to identify how the adaptation process occurs; (ii) to verify the fidelity and acceptability of the final product in comparison to its so called “original”; (iii) to highlight gains and losses, advantages and disadvantages of each version; and (iv) to evaluate the usage of adaptations as a tool to increase the interest of the Brazilian public in reading "more complex" texts. The research is a qualitative and descriptive work, based on theoretical-bibliographic studies, which present the analysis of the contents applied to one of the most important and well-known literary works: The Tragedy of Othello, the Moor of Venice, written by one of the most renowned writers of all time: William Shakespeare (1604). And in two derived versions: Othello, The Complete Version of the Original Play by Oscar Zarate (2011) and Manga Shakespeare: Othello by Ryuta Osada (2009). The analysis of the collected data showed that the two versions in sequential art, adapted from Shakespeare's play, are strongly influenced by its style. But, as different as they are, the adapted text combined with the illustrations chosen and drawn by renowned artists are certainly a very important point that contributes to the readers feeling attracted by the world of complex texts of (classical) literature. Thus, it is believed in its employability and relevance as a tool in the teaching-learning process and formation of a critical-reading public
