Abstract

As it is common in Creative Writing programs, this dissertation is built in two parts: a narrative titled The coffin and a reflective essay named The shell. The coffin begins when Érica returns to her hometown for her aunt’s funeral. When she gets there, she finds out there is no body to be buried, and the coffin is empty. The story follows Érica dealing with grief, familiar and romantic problems. The shell contains the author’s reflections during the writing process of the narrative, and it raises questions about authorship and writing during a pandemic state, as well as meditations specific to the writing of The coffin, such as the choice of space and repetition. The essay uses as primary sources the books O mundo desdobrável: ensaios para depois do fim, by Carola Saavedra (2021), A vulva é uma ferida aberta & outros ensaios, by Gloria Anzaldúa (2021) and Roland Barthes by Roland Barthes, by Roland Barthes (1975).
