“Sempre envidei esforços para bem servir ao Brasil” : a multíplice da trajetória intelectual de Rosalina Coelho Lisboa

Abstract

Rosalina Coelho Lisboa was an important intellectual who acted in Brazilian politics through her relationships and her positions as a journalist and writer. Despite her extensive diplomatic work and her recognition as a great poet in Brazilian literature, there are just a few academic studies that focus on this subject. Therefore, this dissertation seeks to reconstruct Rosalina's intellectual trajectory through selected bibliography, analyzing newspaper reports, her correspondence and writings - poems, articles and books. In particular, by using a qualitative approach in the research methodology, Content Analysis makes it possible to carry out an in-depth investigation and also to obtain complementary information. The gender cut-off is necessary because this is a woman who greatly represented the feminist struggle in Brazil, even if she wasn't totally aligned with it. Thus, the work aims - keeping to the time frame (1906 to 1957), justified by the material available - to demonstrate the nuances of her political thinking, especially in relation to her proximity to Integralism and her support for Getúlio Vargas' government. From this, it aims to understand how a woman and autonomous intellectual entered spheres in which other women generally had no space, becoming a highly respected intellectual in different spheres. In other words, the study also sought to understand how Rosalina was able to act so intensely in her public life and maintain her position in this environment, despite being a woman, gaining a position of great social prominence with this participation. The answer to this question goes beyond her ability to adapt her behavior, her skills in writing and her family's position in high society. It is the combination of countless elements analyzed throughout the dissertation that allow her to enter and remain in environments that are so valued socially and intellectually, but which are mostly made up of and controlled by men. Rosalina was who she was because of a set of issues that shaped her personality and her intellectual thinking. In order to understand what was happening to the writer during the periods of her life, it is necessary to consider her family background, but also to verify Rosalina Coelho Lisboa's support and participation in the political scene, whether in relation to Vargas, Integralism, or even within the feminist movement in Brazil. It is also worth examining how her writing was seen and received inside and outside the country by other writers, in order to understand her image within the intellectual milieu. With this, it is possible to understand more about who this complex personality was, who represented women in new spaces during the 20th century
