Avaliação tridimensional das vias aéreas e da qualidade de vida de pacientes com deformidade esquelética classe II submetidos à cirurgia ortognática

Abstract

The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of bimaxillary orthognathic surgery in patients with Class II skeletal deformity who reported having preoperative respiratory complaints and the repercussions in the pharyngeal airspace and quality of life in the postoperative period. Methods: A retrospective study with 17 patients who underwent orthognathic surgery with bimaxillary advancement. In all cases, a cone beam computed tomography was requested in the pre and postoperative (4 months) periods and a completed quality of life questionnaire (WHOQOL-BREF). Airway assessment and changes in quality of life were performed. Results: There was a statistically significant increase in the pharyngeal air space and the minimum axial area. Patients' perception of breathing and sleep improved significantly. When analyzing quality of life we observed that there was a statistically significant improvement in the set of domains and in all domains separately. The increase in the volume of the Oropharynx correlates with an increase in the patient's perception of quality of life. Conclusion: Orthognathic surgery in patients with Class II skeletal deformity increases the pharyngeal air space, improves the patient's perception of breathing and sleep and has a positive impact on quality of life, when comparing the results in the periods pre and postoperative. When the results were analyzed, we observed a correlation between the significant increase in the volume of the oropharynx with an improvement in quality of life.
