Similarly, pragmatics researchers have been continually deepening their studies in order to find sharpest solutions to the development of pragmatic competence in additional language learners. These two areas of study are the realm from which this dissertation emerged. It is organized into three main chapters, which have different proposals despite being interdependent. The core subject focuses on research into the teaching and learning of Brazilian Portuguese as an additional language and on Second Language Acquisition studies. To accomplish this, the empirical research methodology of Constructive Grounded Theory was adopted to support the studies developed in the other chapters of this dissertation. Throughout the research, a reflective practice study was developed since the nature of this study is related to Applied Linguistics. Firstly, there is a process of reflexivity about the decisions made during the research and the teaching practices prior to and concomitant with the writing of this work, which guided the initial assumptions and discussions. Subsequently, it explores the use of pragmatic markers in academic articles written in Brazilian Portuguese through data-driven analysis of a corpus. During this second stage, specific pragmatic theories and methodologies - such as Interlanguage Pragmatics and Corpus Pragmatics - are used to verify the occurrence of the object of study in the selected texts. This process resulted in a list of the ten most used pragmatic markers in articles written in Portuguese. Ultimately, this list was used to create a rating scale based on the parameters of text organization and mechanisms, content, vocabulary and language use, and pragmatic competence. At the end of this doctoral dissertation, the findings of the research have been transformed into a single assessment device, which aims to verify the levels of pragmatic, linguistic and communicative competencies of students of Brazilian Portuguese as an additional language in an academic context.", publisher = {Pontif?cia Universidade Cat?lica do Rio Grande do Sul}, scholl = {Programa de P?s-Gradua??o em Letras}, note = {Escola de Humanidades} }
